Books like An antic disposition by Gordon, Alan

When Pope Innocent III dispatches troops to hunt the Fools’ Guild, the troupe of jesters, troubadours, and novitiates slips into a secret enclave within the Black Forest. There, the guild’s ancient leader, Father Gerald, invites the troupe—led by the jester couple Theophilos and Claudia—to hear a tale that lies at the heart of one of Shakespeare’s greatest tragedies. Gerald’s story begins in civil war–ridden Denmark, where three men vie for the throne while a fourth remains patient and watchful. The guild’s envoy, Terence of York—known as Yorick by the duke’s son Amleth—enters the strategically vital town of Slesvig. From this moment the narrative unfolds as a saga of treachery, tragedy, and bloodshed, revealing the real historical events that inspired Shakespeare’s play. Yet Father Gerald’s telling is incomplete; he does not know the ending. Only Theophilos retains knowledge of how the tale concludes, a revelation that sends a chill through the guild’s hidden sanctuary.
