Books like Pageant of murder by Gladys Mitchell

In the quaint town of Brayne, councilor Julian Perse plans a grand historical pageant to celebrate its upgrade to borough status. The event features costumed figures from Henry VIII to Edward III, dancers, comedians, and Shakespearean plays. Kitty Trevelyan‑Twigg, a successful fashion writer, is reluctantly enlisted to manage the spectacle, with her old friend Laura Menzies and psychoanalyst Dame Beatrice Bradley in tow. As the pageant proceeds, a series of gruesome killings disguised as historical tragedies occur: a Falstaff statue falls, a Henry VIII actor is found headless, and an Edward III reenactor is murdered in a woodland lane. Kitty and Beatrice, using their respective skills, investigate the deaths, uncovering a link between the staged crimes and the town’s history. The investigation leads to revelations about local power, secrets, and the true motive behind the killings. The novel mixes crime, mystery, and period drama, featuring strong female protagonists, a small-community setting, and a series of historical reenactments that serve both as theatre and as a canvas for violent intrigue.
