Books like Insurrecto by Gina Apostol

In Insurrecto, Gina Apostol weaves the stories of a Filipino translator and an American filmmaker as they collaborate and conflict over a screenplay depicting the 1901 Balangiga massacre, when Filipino revolutionaries attacked an American garrison and the U.S. forces retaliated in the surrounding countryside. The novel interlaces two versions of the story—one focusing on a white photographer, the other on a Filipino schoolteacher—and follows a kaleidoscopic, multivocal narrative that examines how women artists, lovers, revolutionaries, and daughters come to terms with their own truths and histories. Apostol pushes the bounds of fiction to illuminate a forgotten chapter of Philippine and American history, presenting a meditative yet playful exploration of memory, identity, and the political power of storytelling.
