Books like The Spanish Bride by Georgette Heyer

Set during the Peninsular Wars (1807‑1814), the story follows Brigade‑Major Henry George Wakelyn Smith, a veteran of the 1812 siege of Badjos, who unexpectedly marries the young Spanish noblewoman Doña Juana María de los Dolores de León. As Henry and Juana navigate the dangers of battlefield life—marching with the troops, enduring the winter of the army’s tent, and confronting the chaos of the Battle of Waterloo—their relationship evolves against the backdrop of military strategy, noble customs, and the rigid social mores of the Regency period. The narrative explores the contrast between the sheltered life of Spanish nobility and the harsh realities of a soldier’s existence, illuminating the personal sacrifices and emotional resilience required to survive war and love. The novel incorporates research drawn from diaries, dispatches, and writings of the Duke of Wellington’s forces, offering a vivid depiction of Regency‑era military life, the customs of the British and Spanish aristocracy, and the vivid experiences of those who lived through the conflict.
