Books like Abraham Lincoln by George S. McGovern

America's greatest president rose to power in the country's greatest hour of need. His vision saw the United States through the Civil War. Abraham Lincoln towers above the others who have held the office of president -- the icon of greatness, the pillar of strength whose words bound up the nation's wounds. His presidency is the hinge on which American history pivots, the time when the young republic collapsed of its own contradictions and a new birth of freedom, sanctified by blood, created the United States we know today. His story has been told many times, but never by a man who himself sought the office of president and contemplated the awesome responsibilities that come with it. George S. McGovern -- a Midwesterner, former U.S. senator, presidential candidate, veteran, and historian by training -- offers his unique insight into our sixteenth president. He shows how Lincoln sometimes went astray, particularly in his restrictions on civil liberties, but also how he adjusted his sights and transformed the Civil War from a political dispute to a moral crusade. McGovern's account reminds us why we hold Lincoln in such esteem and why he remains the standard by which all of his successors are measured. - Publisher.

Abe Lincoln by 6724220|Kay Winters book cover

πŸ“˜ Abe Lincoln

"The story of how a boy who loved to read changed the world forever." This is a captivating book, written in what seems to me to be free verse. I would say it is suitable for all elementary grades, to be read to the younger students and read by the older ones. Its emphasis lies in Abe Lincoln's childhood. He doesn't study law until page 34 out of 37, and he's elected the 16th President on page 36. Children will learn about young Abe's family life, the death of his mother, his father's remarriage, and about Abe pulling corn in a friend's field for 3 days to pay him back for ruining a book he had borrowed. The illustrations are wonderful, rendered in oil paint on canvas. This is the best elementary-level book about Abraham Lincoln I've experienced. Amazon.

πŸ“˜ Abraham Lincoln

Currently combined under one title are various copies of the 10 volumes of the Nicolay and Hay "Abraham Lincoln a history", together with a 21 page summary of the set. It is not possible to distinguish these volumes in a list, which would require giving each volume a separate title, including the volume number in the title. However, when a volume description is brought up on a single page, the volume number can be determined from the pagination field, in the form "v [n] of 10", and in most cases, also from the cover photo.
