Books like Liberty by Garrison Keillor

Clint is a dependable figure in Lake Wobegon, serving as the Lutheran church treasurer and the reliable auto mechanic who starts cars on freezing mornings. Over the past six years he has directed the town’s Fourth of July parade, transforming it from a simple procession of pickup trucks and local families into a dazzling spectacle that drew national attention, including coverage by CNN and a visit by the state governor. The community's excitement peaks as Clint announces his candidacy for Congress, but his well-documented personal struggles—an uneven marriage, fondness for vodka sours, and a curious friendship with a 24‑year‑old woman who famously dresses as the Statue of Liberty for the parade—invite both humor and concern among the townsfolk. The novel captures Latin Wobegon's characteristic warmth, blending humorous observations with genuine affection for the residents’ quirky lives.
