Opera avant Engels, a été publié quand il avait seulement 24 ans. A l'origine destiné à un public de lecteurs allemands, l'essai est maintenant considéré par beaucoup comme un compte classique des conditions universelles du prolétariat industriel. Le fils aîné d'un textile industriel, Engels est devenu intéressé par le journalisme radical dans sa jeunesse. Mandat de la famille en Angleterre pour faire l'apprentissage, ce qu'il vit encore plus radicale. Dans cette période, il a formé le partenariat intellectuel permanent avec Karl Marx.
