In 1950s England, Lady Coulton, desperate to repair a strained marriage, asks Kate, an amateur sleuth, to locate her long‑lost daughter Sophia. Kate’s investigation takes her to the old library where a ghost has haunted the staff for forty years. Despite her skepticism, Kate participates in a ritual to expel the restless spirit, only to discover that Dr. Potter—an esteemed mathematician—has been strangled in the basement, his body clutched in dusty volumes from a collapsed bookcase. As the police remove his body and an Italian organ grinder named Umberto—owning a mischievous Capuchin monkey—becomes the prime suspect, Kate witnesses his frailty and realizes a false accusation. With the real killer still at large, Kate must navigate clues in the estate and the haunted halls to protect the innocent and bring justice.
