Books like The Shrinking of Treehorn by Florence Parry Heide
Treehorn’s life takes an unexpected turn when his size actually decreases instead of simply being imagined. The comic panel follows his challenges at school—teacher admonitions, an awkward day with the principal, and the frustration of a shrinking self. A magical game later restores his original stature, only to reveal that he is now turning faintly green, leaving him with new questions about his identity and body image.
The story explores the humorous yet emotionally resonant theme of growing up, body image, and the social pitfalls a child faces while navigating school, friendships, and the desire to fit in.
Through its light-hearted tone, the book encourages reflection on how children cope with changes in appearance and the importance of acceptance, offering a playful lens on personal development and school life.
