Books like Imaginary Fred by Eoin Colfer

"Imaginary Fred" follows the story of Sam, a lonely child who longs for companionship. When he asks for help, a friendly imaginary companion named Fred materializes, bringing joy and adventure to Sam’s life. Fred’s presence begins as a magical, almost inevitable phenomenon: when conditions align, every desire for friendship can manifest in the form of an imaginary playmate. Although Fred seems a perfect companion, the narrative explores the fleeting nature of such friendships. Whenever Sam meets a new real friend, Fred’s existence diminishes, fading into the wind until Sam’s wishes summon him again. With its gentle exploration of imagination, loneliness, and the value of genuine human connection, the book offers a warm, thoughtful look at how imaginary and real friendships intersect in the world of young readers.
