Books like The exiles return by Elisabeth De Waal

The Exiles Return, by Elisabeth de Waal, takes readers to a Vienna that has been demolished by war, a city of ruined splendor and a fractured ruling class. The novel follows a small group of exiles, each coming back under very different circumstances and having to learn to live with the shattered reality of a country in painful recovery. With precise and sensitive prose, de Waal—an exile herself—captures the struggle of individuals and society to rebuild and redefine their identities in the aftermath of conflict. The book offers a vivid depiction of Austria’s post‑war challenges, including the presence of fallen aristocrats, lingering Nazi influence, and the cultural toll of violence. The narrative centers on a diverse cast: a Jewish research scientist weary of his life in America, a wealthy Greek businessman eyeing wartime spoils, a teenage woman sent to find herself, and a young man formerly holding a noble title. Their stories unfold against the backdrop of a city that must learn to exist without the social hierarchies that once defined it. Drawn to the book’s departure from glorified pasts, de Waal’s work serves as an artifact of a pivotal historical moment while remaining enduring in its human examination of exile, homecoming, and the work of cultural reconstruction.
