Edmond Rostand’s verse drama "Cyrano de Bergerac" was first performed in 1897 and published in 1898. Set in 17th‑century Paris, it follows the nobleman Cyrano, celebrated for his wit and swordplay yet troubled by his large nose. Cyrano secretly loves the beautiful Roxane and aids his friend Christian by delivering Cyrano’s eloquent love poems as Christian’s own, hoping Roxane will fall for him instead. Christian eventually realizes Roxane loves Cyrano’s virtues, not the false persona, and requests Cyrano to reveal his identity. Later, Christian dies in battle, and Cyrano, as he nears death, revisits Roxane and recites one of his love letters, prompting her to understand she loved Cyrano all along. The play ends with Cyrano’s peaceful contentment in death.
