Books like Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton

Edith Wharton’s 1911 novel Ethan Frome opens with a frame narrative: a nameless engineer arrives in Starkfield, Massachusetts, and hears the story of Ethan Frome from the farmer’s household. Ethan, a strong yet crippled former farmhand, is bound to his ailing wife Zeena in a life of toil and sacrifice. Zeena’s cousin, Mattie Silver, lives with the Frome family, and Ethan’s longing for her pulls him into a forbidden love triangle. The story unfolds against a harsh, desolate winter landscape, exposing the poverty, domestic duty, and social expectations that bound the characters. Ethan and Mattie’s illicit affection reaches a tragic climax when, in despair, they attempt, but fail, to end their suffering together. The novel concludes with the engineer’s arrival in the Frome kitchen, where he sees the weary household he has just heard about. The narrative explores themes of isolation, obligation, and the crushing weight of social convention.
