Humanity has spread across the stars and become part of a vast galactic community of alien races. Beyond the boundaries of explored space, a race of sentient starships known as the Reapers threatens to harvest all organic life. The leader of the pro‑human black‑ops organization Cerberus, the Illusive Man, knows the truth about the Reapers and launches a desperate plan to uncover the enemy’s strengths and weaknesses. He selects former Cerberus operative Paul Grayson—who previously rescued his daughter from the organization with the help of Ascension project director Kahlee Sanders—as the puppet for horrific experiments using modified Reaper technology. Kahlee seeks help from Alliance war hero Captain David Anderson to locate the secret Cerberus facility where Grayson is being held. Their search is complicated by other forces also pursuing Grayson and the mounting pressure of time. As the experiments proceed, the Reaper technology twists Grayson’s mind, and insidious whispers grow ever louder in his thoughts, threatening to take over his very identity and unleash the Reapers on an unsuspecting galaxy.
