Books like Generation A by Douglas Coupland

When the world’s bees disappear, four hours later five unconnected people from different corners of the globe are struck by an unknown swarm. They are whisked away by enigmatic figures in hazmat suits, examined in sterile, Ikea‑style rooms, and then pushed onto the million‑minute screens that dominate contemporary life. Over the next day, these strangers, each drawn into media stardom for a fleeting 15 minutes, must cope with a barrage of surreal, digitally saturated situations. A charismatic scientist with hidden motives eventually brings the five together, forging an unlikely bond that transcends the ordinary. Coupland uses the narrative to explore how storytelling and reading work as refuges against the relentless noise of the internet, placing the novel firmly within the realm of science‑fiction satire. The book mirrors the structure of his earlier work, *Generation X*, while expanding into new territory that blends optimism about the future with the everyday dread of a digital age. *Generation A* tackles themes of information society, environmental loss, and the paradoxical power of narrative. Through its humorous yet unsettling premise, it presents a critique of tech‑mediated culture and the fleeting nature of online celebrity.
