Eve Mozell’s life revolves around telephone calls to her sisters and to her father, a man who has spent his adult years battling alcoholism, manic depression, and erratic affection. As his health declines, Eve assumes the role of caregiver amid a family that drifts apart: her sister Georgia, a busy magazine editor, is rarely home, and her sister Madeline, an actress, is gone on vacation. The responsibility of caring for her dying father forces Eve to confront her own anxieties about mortality, aging, and the place she occupies in the world. A strained marriage and the antics of her sixteen‑year‑old son and his girlfriend add to her exhaustion. During this turmoil, she finds companionship in someone she meets by phone, a relationship that both supports and destabilizes her further. In search of stability, Eve delves into her family's past, learning how past Mozell sisters once raised their mother‑absent father while caring for each other, and she asks whether her own path may mirror that history.
