Books like Modern environmentalism by David Pepper

Modern Environmentalism offers a detailed introduction to the field of environmentalism and the history of human attitudes toward nature. It situates key environmental ideas within their social and historical context, covering radical environmentalist approaches to valuing nature, economics, third‑world development, technology, ecofeminism, and social change. The book surveys pre‑modern conceptions of nature, the development of science, and the roots of radical environmentalism in nineteenth‑ and twentieth‑century movements. Influences such as Malthus, Darwin, Haeckel, utopian socialism, romanticism, and holistic system thinkers are examined. By placing science at the heart of the society‑nature debate, the text explains how post‑modern ideas of subjectivity and the breakdown of scientific authority have evolved, and how scientific "truths" about nature have become divorced from their social and ideological context. Modern Environmentalism provides a deeper understanding of the environmental debate and the various approaches to achieving a desired ecological society.
