Books like Divina Commedia by Dante Alighieri

The Divine Comedy is a poetic narrative in which Dante Alighieri journeys through the afterlife. It is divided into three sections—Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise—each comprising 33 cantos, with an introductory canto in Hell, totaling 100. The structure reflects medieval numerology: 100 symbolizes perfection, 3 represents the Holy Trinity, and 33 corresponds to the years of Christ’s earthly life. In the first canto Dante becomes lost in a forest, encounters the Latin poet Virgil, and together they descend into Hell, depicted as concentric circles closing in on the Earth’s center where Lucifer lies imprisoned in ice. They exit the underworld, ascend a mountain of purification in Purgatory, and finally reach the celestial realm. Virgil is released by Beatrice, who accompanies Dante into the light of Paradise, the eternal dwelling of the blessed.
