The Fox and the Hound, written by Daniel P. Mannix in 1967 and illustrated by John Schoenherr, tells the intertwined lives of Tod, a red fox raised by a human for his first year, and Copper, a half‑bloodhound owned by a local hunter. After Tod unintentionally kills the hunter’s prized hound, a relentless pursuit ensues, set against the backdrop of a transforming human world. The novel examines the daily realities of a fox—seeking food, a mate, and defending territory—while exploring the practitioner’s craft, hunting techniques, and the natural instincts that drive both predator and hunt. Mannix’s preparation for the story involved detailed study of both tame and wild foxes, various hunting methods, and how hounds track prey, ensuring that the characters’ actions remain realistic and grounded in real animal behavior.
