Books like Rising sun, falling shadow by Daniel Kalla

When Dr. Franz Adler, a Jewish physician, and his wife Sunny are uprooted in 1943, they find themselves confined to Shanghai’s one‑square‑kilometer ghetto. The cramped enclave forces them to confront relentless heat, starvation and tropical diseases. Even amid such hardships, the couple witnesses a remarkable culture of resilience unfold. Within the ghetto’s limits, music, theater, and sport flourish, becoming lifelines that preserve the community’s shared identity and hope. Through these forms of artistic and physical expression, the Jews of Shanghai demonstrate an indomitable spirit that keeps their traditions alive while shielding them from the harsh realities of war. "Rising Sun, Falling Shadow" captures the stark contrasts of suffering and artistic defiance, illuminating how a community under extreme oppression can find comfort and solidarity within its cultural practices.
