Books like Thirty-three teeth by Colin Cotterill

In Colin Cotterill’s – The New York Times Book Review has called “a wonderfully fresh and exotic mystery” – Dr. Siri Paiboun becomes national coroner in Laos after the Communist take‑over. Though untrained in forensic practice, the independent, 72‑year‑old physician’s relentless curiosity and his belief in the spirits of the dead guide him through a series of baffling deaths: possible bear bites, a high‑rise fall, and charred helicopter wreckage in Luang Prabang. Paiboun’s investigations are conducted with the help of his ambitious secretary Dtui and Mr. Geung, a morgue assistant with Down syndrome. Together, they navigate the delicate balance between modern science, the ancient belief system of the Lao spirit world, and the dangerous politics of the new regime. The novel balances forensic intrigue with mysticism, offering an intimate portrait of an aging doctor in a communist country while charting the tension between history and contemporary reality. Cotterill’s narrator‐style storytelling, praised by the Washington Post for its vivid cultural insight, delivers a compelling narrative that examines the role of an elder physician amid the socio‑political changes of Laos.
