Books like When the devil drives by Christopher Brookmyre

When a client hires actress‑turned‑private‑investigator Jasmine Sharp to locate her missing sister Tessa Garrion, Sharp expects a routine search for a lost relative. Instead she is pulled into the shadowy world of professional theater, where she faces warnings for probing too deep into the past. Meanwhile, Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod is summoned to a Highland murder scene after a prominent figure in the Scottish arts community is shot dead at a post‑performance news event at Cragruthes Castle, following an outdoor staging of *A Midsummer Night's Dream*. McLeod’s initial leads prove to be red herrings, forcing her to dig into motives layered within the arts community. As Sharp investigates Tessa’s disappearance in 1981—an event now suspected to be murder—she discovers links to a drug‑riddled Highland estate retreat and occult rituals that implicate several powerful arts figures. The intertwining investigations reveal a conspiracy that will stop at nothing to keep the truth hidden, making both cases far more dangerous than either agent anticipated.
