Books like Father of Frankenstein by Christopher Bram

James Whale, famed for directing classic horror films such as "Frankenstein" and "The Bride of Frankenstein," meets an untimely death in 1957 at his Los Angeles home. In Christopher Bram’s novel, Whale’s post‑stroke decline is marked by confusion and haunting memories of his working‑class roots in Britain, lavish Hollywood premieres, and intimate liaisons with celebrated figures like Greta Garbo and Elsa Manchester. As Whale’s mind reels, he crafts an elaborate fate for his gardener, Clayton Boone, a former marine whose presence sparks a clash of cultures and emotions. Bram juxtaposes the two men’s perspectives—Whale’s sardonic English exile and Boone’s disaffected American—to explore themes of fame, mortality, and concealed desire. The narrative, drawing on cinematic influences from "Sunset Boulevard" and the works of Christopher Isherwood, offers a cutting look at Hollywood’s glittering façade and its darker undercurrents.
