In 1945, on a Scottish farm, 13‑year‑old Lorna Anderson faces the grim realities of wartime life—chore, rationing, and the looming threat of enemy soldiers. When a German prisoner of war, Paul Vogel, is assigned to assist on the farm, Lorna initially resists, outraged that he, an enemy, should work beside her while her brothers fight abroad. As she spends time with Paul, she becomes drawn into his world, learning about his war experiences and his hopes for a home in Germany. The boy behind the soldier humanizes the enemy and stirs feelings that conflict with her loyalty and the expectations of her family. Lorna must decide whether her emerging love for Paul justifies the personal risk and sacrifice required as the war’s end looms. Key themes include wartime resilience, cross‑national empathy, the coming‑of‑age journey, and the complexities of love in a divided world.
