Books like Pastoral by Carl Phillips

Pastoral is Carl Phillips’ sixth poetry collection, following acclaimed works such as Quiver of Arrows, Riding Westward, and the National Book Award‑finalist The Rest of Love. In this work Phillips turns his eye inward, rendering the field as the heart and the heart itself as a complex, shadowy terrain. Through rhythmical, meditative sequences he interrogates how we might fulfill our lives, reconcile bodily desire with spiritual intent, and find balance between control and surrender in both poetry and everyday relationships. The poems weave together longing, art, history, and nature, all treated as forms of wanting that deepen the reader’s experience of desire—both erotic and spiritual—within a pastoral framework. Critics note the collection’s emotional nuance, formal coherence, and the way Phillips’ powerful, varied rhythms invite honest engagement with the self and the world.
