Books like Yours Faithfully, Bertrand Russell by Bertrand Russell

Bertrand Russell, one of the twentieth century’s most prolific philosophers, also served as a vocal public gadfly. In this volume, three‑quarters of his roughly 400 letters to the editor are reproduced, offering a vivid record of Russell’s incisive criticism of injustice, his support for peace, and his moral opposition to conscription during World War I, fascism in the 1930s, McCarthyism in the 1950s, and the nuclear threat of the Cold War. His razor‑sharp irony and activist rhetoric reveal a man who believed practice and theory were inseparable, and who repeatedly voiced his convictions through the written page.

My Philosophical Development by 1410756|Bertrand Russell book cover

📘 My Philosophical Development

Russell gives an account of his philosophical development. He describes his Hegelian period and includes hitherto unpublished notes for a Hegelian philosophy of science. He deals next with the two-fold revolution involved with his abandonment of idealism and adoption of a mathematical logic founded upon that of Giuseppe Peano. After two chapters on Principia Mathematica (1910-1913), he passes to the problems of perception as dealt with in Our Knowledge of the External World (1914). In a chapter on ‘The Impact of Wittgenstein’, Russell examines what he now thinks must be accepted and what rejected in that philosopher's work. He notes the changes from earlier theories required by the adoption of William James's view that sensation is not essentially relational and is not per se a form of knowledge. In an explanatory chapter, he endeavours to remove misconceptions of and objections to his theories as to the relation of perception to scientific knowledge. Russell concludes with a reprint of some articles on modern Oxford philosophy.

Human Society in Ethics and Politics by 1410756|Bertrand Russell book cover

📘 Human Society in Ethics and Politics

First published in 1954, *Human Society in Ethics and Politics* is Bertrand Russell’s last full account of his ethical and political positions relating to both politics and religion. Ethics, he argues, are necessary to man because of the conflict between intelligence and impulse – if one were without the other, there would be no place for ethics. Man’s impulses and desires are equally social and solitary. Politics and ethics are the means by which we as a society and as individuals become socially purposeful and moral codes inculcate our rules of action.
