Bella Cohen Spewack, born in Transylvania at the turn of the twentieth century, immigrated to New York’s Lower East Side with her mother in 1902. A young immigrant, she later chronicled her childhood and adolescence on the vibrant streets of Manhattan. After moving to Berlin, where she worked as a reporter, Bella wrote this memoir of her formative years. Upon returning to the United States, she and her husband, Sam Spewack, emerged as successful playwrights, most famously collaborating on the Pulitzer Prize‑winning Broadway musical "Kiss Me, Kate."
