Books like The Campaigns of Alexander by Arrian

Greek with facing English translation

A factual biography of Alexander the Great, detailing his life, campaigns, and the historical context of his reign from 356 to 323 BC.

By the time of his death in 323 BC, Alexander III of Macedonia had built an empire that stretched from the eastern Mediterranean coast through Asia minor and into the Indus Valley. A former student of the philosopher Aristotle, Alexander succeeded Philip the second as king of Macedonia in 336 BC and spent the next 13 years subduing and consolidating the lands of the Persian Empire. Even before his sudden death at the age of 32, Alexander had achieved mythical status throughout his kingdom, and in the centuries that followed, his life became the subject of countless chronicles and biographies. N.G.L. Hammond, the foremost expert on ancient Macedonian history, here presents a new account of Alexander's fabled career. Through a careful analysis of ancient sources -- the writings of Diodorus, Justin, Curtius, Plutarch, and Arrian -- Hammond has effectively separated the work of reliable contemporaries from fictional reports of Alexander's accomplishments. The resulting narrative, enriched by a lifetime of research, pronounces the Macedonian conqueror a man truly deserving of the title Alexander the Great. - Jacket flap.

When the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, they soon realized that their army had the wrong equipment, the wrong training, and the wrong tactics to fight the Mujahideen. Their premier army training center, the Frunze Military Academy, produced this book to capture the lessons learned from the Soviet-Afghan war. It contains a series of tactical vignettes, each describing a single military operation in the words of one of the officers in charge. The operations range from convoy escorts and the defense of isolated outposts all the way up to major combined-arms sweeps and airborne assaults on Mujahideen training centers. The success or failure of each operation is analyzed by the Frunze military staff, and also by Lester W. Grau, who translated the work into English and is an accomplished military analyst and historian. This book is therefore unique in supplying both Soviet and Western military perspectives on guerrilla warfare and counter-insurgency operations in Afghanistan. There are 45 tactical battle maps, and a glossary of Soviet Army terminology and map symbols. This is a companion piece to “The Other Side of the Mountain: Mujahideen Tactics in the Soviet-Afghan War,” which tells the story from the other side of the war.

A concise biography of Alexander the Great written by historian Pierre Briant, detailing the life, achievements, and legacy of the famed Hellenic king and general.

The "Great Captains" frequently looked to crucial battles to learn lessons that they themselves employed. While the battles of antiquity have often been examined, Western generals looked to the wars of the Greeks and the Romans, the Chinese to their own campaigns, and so on. Never before have military leaders and other students of military history had the benefit of a systematic look at the key battles throughout the ancient world. In this volume, Gabriel and Boose examine the 31 wars, campaigns or battles from Megiddo (1479 B.C.) to the fall of Constantinople (A.D. 1453) that had the greatest impact on the ancient world, stretching from the Mediterranean through the Middle East to Japan and Korea. Beginning with Megiddo, the first battle in history for which there is a relatively detailed account of strategy and tactics, Gabriel and Boose provide a systematic survey of major battles, wars, and campaigns. Each analysis begins with the Strategic Setting, which places events within the larger political and strategic context: then looks to The Antagonists, providing a comparative look at each army, its equipment, tactics, weaponry, logistics, style of combat leadership, and doctrine to assess its major strengths and weaknesses. The authors then examine The Battle, offering a detailed account of the struggle complete with maps and charts to clarify the analysis of what happened on the battlefield. The final section, Lessons of War, dissects each battle for its successes and failures that are particularly relevant to the development and conduct of war in the modern age. Each survey ends with a bibliography of key sources for further reading. This volume is designed to be an invaluable reference source for military historians and professionals as well as the general reader.
