Books like The winter vault by Anne Michaels

In 1964 a newly married Canadian couple, engineer Avery and botanist Jean, reside on a houseboat below the towering temples of Abu Simbel. Avery works on the dismantling and reconstruction of the falling stone as the rise of the Aswan Dam threatens its waters. Their marriage, rooted in a shared passion for creation and destruction, is set against the dramatic transformation of the St. Lawrence River and the construction of the seaway which swallowed towns and homes. When tragedy forces the couple apart, Avery returns to Toronto to study architecture while Jean finds herself drawn into the world of Lucjan, a Polish‑emigre artist whose haunting stories of occupied Warsaw deepen her longing for another life. The narrative explores the physical and emotional landscapes of its characters, weaving love, loss, and the enduring power of memory. Anne Michaels’ lyrical prose illuminates both the tangible, engineering feats of ancient temples and the fragile, intimate moments that bind and separate people.
