Books like Dragon Harper by Anne McCaffrey

In the world of Pern, where dragons patrol blue skies and the periodic Threadfall threatens life, Anne and Todd McCaffrey explore a different danger: a fast‑spreading, virulent plague that can kill every last human on the planet. The story follows best‑friends Kindan, Nonala, and Kelsa at Harper Hall, where Nonala and Kelsa face bullying, and Kindan steps up to defend Kelsa, forging an unexpected friendship. Nearby at Fort Hold, a clutch of fire‑lizard eggs hatches, and Kindan impresses one, winning the heart of Lord Bemin’s daughter, Koriana—though the Lord disapproves of a alliance between a Harper and his daughter. As the plague ravages holds, the Dragonriders must keep their distance from infection while Kindan and his fellow apprentices search for a cure to save humanity, knowing that failure is unthinkable and success may be even harder to bear.
