Books like Blue shoe by Anne Lamott

Mattie Ryder is a neurotic, well‑intentioned, and financially strained woman living in a deteriorating house in San Francisco. Her life is further destabilized by a failed marriage, a mother battling illness, and two young children whose behavior reflects the strain of divorce. While reflecting on her past, Mattie discovers a small rubber blue shoe, one of several items left in her late father’s car. The shoe and the other artifacts become keys to her childhood, pulling her and her brother into a search for truth about their family. Through this investigation, Mattie gains a deeper understanding of her mother’s burden and confronts the fragile reality of her relationship with her father, eschewing the shallow view she once held. Beyond its intimate family drama, the book explores themes of friendship, single motherhood, and the struggles of divorced women, all set against the backdrop of contemporary San Francisco life.
