Books like Where or when by Anita Shreve

Charles Callahan’s life is unsettled: debts, a threatened home, and a family under strain. While reading the Sunday paper, he spots a photograph of Sian Richards, his teenage summer lover from New England. The image ignites a flood of memories and a desperate desire to reach out. He writes to her, and letters begin to pass between man and woman. Sian, now a poet married with a child on an onion farm, is intrigued yet cautious. Their growing correspondence pulls them into a fervent, fragile romance that challenges the limits of time and circumstance. Amid financial turmoil and emotional risk, Charles and Sian confront their shared past and their present selves, leading to a powerful, if unpredictable, culmination. The novel captures the tension of rekindled love, the weight of financial insecurity, and the passage of memory, resonating with anyone who has ever wondered whether a first love can survive decades. “Where or When” explores the complex dance of romance and reality in contemporary fiction, set against the tranquil backdrop of New England and Pennsylvania.
