Books like The Blood Countess by Andrei Codrescu

Set against the backdrop of Hungary’s turbulent 20th century, the story follows Drake Bathory‑Kereshtur, a Hungarian emigré living in New York. Haunted by his troubled relationships and the memory of the 1956 revolution, he returns to his homeland after communism falls. In Hungary, the specter of his famous ancestor, Countess Elizabeth Bathory—a 16th‑century noblewoman notorious for her rumored murders and bizarre rituals—follows him. As Drake confronts this gruesome legacy, the narrative delves into themes of identity, guilt, and the persistent influence of family history. The novel is narrated from Drake’s perspective, offering a tense, intimate exploration of his search for roots and his struggle to reconcile with the horror that he inherits. Critically, the book interweaves historical facts about Bathory with the psychological experience of a modern descendant, creating a chilling atmosphere that fuses horror, crime, and biographical intrigue.
