Books like Gracefully Grayson by Amy Polonsky

When Grayson hears about the high school play, she sees it as a chance to step out of the shadows she has lingered in, keeping her love of dresses and a yearning for performance a secret. The role of Persephone, the Greek goddess whose story is one of captivity and eventual liberation, resonates with Grayson in a profound way. As she rehearses, the school’s director—a teacher—and her fellow cast members slowly become allies in a community that offers her the affirmation that had been missing. Through the collaborative, creative process of the drama production, Grayson finds the courage to confront her self‑acceptance and to embrace the person she truly is. The novel explores themes of identity, family life, and the transformative power of theatre, all set within a middle‑school environment that provides both challenges and encouragement for a transgender student. By sharing her journey with classmates and teachers, Grayson learns that a supportive cast can help anyone find their rightful place.
