Books like Never coming back by Alison McGhee
Clara Winter drifts far from her rural Adirondack roots after her mother, Tamar, a fiercely independent woman, urges her to leave for college. The years of separation forge Clara into a successful writer, but a summons back to town forces her to confront the unraveling of Tamar’s mind as early‑onset Alzheimer’s creeps in.
Now in her 30s, Clara grapples with questions of why her mother insisted she leave, what secrets might remain buried, and whether she herself carries the genetic risk. Between visiting a familiar yet altered hometown and navigating the complex bond of mother and daughter, she seeks answers before the memories slip away.
McGhee weaves a quiet tale about family, memory, and the quiet recognition that knowing oneself often begins with understanding those who shape us.
