Books like The Question of Bruno by Aleksandar Hemon

Aleksandar Hemon’s The Question of Bruno weaves together a novella and several short stories, all connected by recurring characters, distinct settings, and a unified narrative voice. The tales unfold in both Chicago and Sarajevo, offering a poignant examination of the lasting impact of war and the complex process of rebuilding a new life as an exile. Hemon’s work, previously published in anthologies such as Ploughshares, Best American Short Stories, and TriQuarterly, showcases his deft blending of personal memory with broader social themes. The collection delves into the psychological scars carried by those displaced by conflict, while also portraying the cultural exchanges that arise when immigrant communities settle in new environments. Through subtle, often lyrical prose, Hemon invites readers to consider the lingering effects of conflict and the resilience required to forge identities in foreign landscapes.
