Books like The Weapon Makers by A. E. van Vogt

For centuries the Isher Dynasty has ruled a sprawling empire that spans Earth and many other worlds. The Dynasty’s power is checked only by the Weapon Makers, a cadre of dedicated scientists who wield their expertise to prevent a total takeover and maintain checks and balances within the political establishment. For the first time in history a spy infiltrates the ranks of the Weapon Makers and finds favor with the young Empress. Her insistence that the spy be eliminated—and her mysterious animus toward Captain Hedrock—throws the brilliant officer into a perilous crossfire both from the Empire and the Weapon Makers. Hedrock’s survival skills are soon put to the ultimate test as he faces a relentless hunt from both sides. The novel explores the tension between scientific power and political control, the loyalty of those who build weapons for the greater good, and the fragile trust required to prevent a dynasty’s unchecked expansion.
