Smedley D. Butler (July 30, 1881 – June 21, 1940) was a United States Marine Corps officer born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served for over 34 years and became one of the most decorated Marines in U.S. history, earning numerous awards, including two Medal of Honor medals. Known for his outspoken views on militarism and warfare, Butler was a prominent critic of military and political corruption during his lifetime.
