Ferdinand de Saussure (1857–1913) was a Swiss linguist born in Geneva, Switzerland. Often regarded as a founding figure of modern linguistics, he profoundly influenced the development of structuralism and semiotics. Saussure's work laid the groundwork for understanding language as a system of signs and emphasized the importance of studying language synchronically rather than diachronically.
