*Last day in Vietnam* is Will Eisner's memoir of his years in the military, six stories garnered from observations of camp life at close range, of soldiers who were engaged not only in the daily hostilities of war but also in larger, more personal combat.
This book joins three works by Will Eisner, all set around Dropsie Avenue in the Bronx (New York).
(1) Contract with God (1978), comprising four independent brief stories.
(2) A Life Force (1988), which follows events in Dropsie Avenue during the Great Depression years, and
(3) Dropsie Avenue (1995), where the story follows the neighborhood from the 1800s (farming community) to high-end suburb, its decline to a tenement community, the total breakdown and final rebuilding in the 1990s.
A collection of three graphic novels and two shorter works that explore Eisner's life as an artist and his family history.
In this classic graphic novel, Will Eisner’s pen cuts an expansive swath through all aspects of the human condition. A Family Matter starts close to home, following a family as it gathers to observe the ninetieth birthday of its patriarch. While they must decide how best to provide for him, he ends up making a crucial choice of his own.
This book is the third part of Will Eisner's *The contract with God* trilogy,
set around Dropsie Avenue in the Bronx (New York).
The story follows the neighborhood from the 1800s farming community transformation to a high-end suburb, its decline to a tenement community, the total breakdown and final rebuilding in the 1990s.
Created by the United States Army as an easy means to educate soldiers on how to care for their newly-issued M16A1 rifle while in a combat environment. **Tutorial, Graphic Arts:**
A companion to ***Comics & Sequential Art***, this book takes the principles examined in that title and applies them to the process of ***graphic storytelling***.
Eisner shows comic artists, filmmakers and graphic designers how to craft stories in a visual medium.
They'll also learn why *mastering the basics of storytelling* is far more important than the hollow flash and dazzle seen in lesser work. Readers will learn everything from the fine points of graphic storytelling to the big picture of the comics medium, including how to:
Use art that enhances your story, rather than obscuring it;
Wield images like narrative tools;
Write and illustrate effective dialogue;
Develop ideas that can be turned into dynamic stories;
These lessons and more are illustrated with storytelling samples from Eisner himself along with other comic book favorites, including Pulitzer Prize-winner Art Spiegelman, Robert Crumb, Milton Caniff and Al Capp.
Will Eisner —best known for his influential comic book series *The Spirit* and his groundbreaking graphic novel *A Contract with God*—believed in the teaching power of comics, and from 1951 to 1971 he produced *PS* magazine for the U.S. Army. This *Preventive Maintenance Monthly* (called *PS* because it was a postscript to the standard technical manuals) was aimed at teaching American soldiers everything about weapons safety for vehicles, aircraft, firearms, and electronics. Eisner illustrated these vital lessons in drawings, pinups, step-by-step guides, and comic strips. This collection contains the best of Eisner’s 227 issues of PS, reproduced in a portable digest format. This relatively unknown work by Eisner is finally explored—the missing link between his comic books and his later, more mature graphic novel style.
