Mason Locke Weems was born on October 5, 1759, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. An American book agent and minister, Weems is best known for his role as a popular storyteller and writer during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. His work helped shape American patriotic narratives, and he remains a notable figure in American literary history.
The first of these works contains both factual and mythical material about George Washington; the second is an early reader combining moral lessons with reading and spelling.
